Stainless steel is a versatile grade whose demand in the industry grows year after year. However, stainless steel is not a single entity and is designed with different grades that have their own set of corrosion resistance and high-temperature properties. The Stainless Steel Equivalent Grades are components that are used as an alternative to a grade if it is costly or unavailable. The equivalent grade has similar mechanical properties; however, their working temperature may differ. Grading systems are designed by different unions and countries specifying steel grades and their specific working range, amongst which the European (EN) and American standards (ASTM, ASME) are very famous. The European equivalents of Stainless Steel are the British Standards (BS), International Organization for Standardization (ISO), Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS), European Standard (EN), German Standard (DIN), and Chinese Standard (GB) which are other common grades used internationally. The sheer number of standards and systems grading the 304 stainless steel equivalent grades based on the alloy's unique composition is very difficult. This is as the SS 304 by the SAE standard can also be graded as EN 1.4305, EN X8CrNiN18-9, UNS S30400, DIN X5CrNi18-9, DIN X5CrNi18-10, DINX5CrNi19-9, BS 304S 15,BS 304S 16, BS304S 18, BS304S 25, BS En58E and JIS SUS 304, JIS SUS 304-CSP. The 316 stainless steel equivalent grades are part of the austenitic stainless steel grade. To get a precise grade designation of this alloy, it must have strict requirements set by the organization that is maintaining the standard grade.

Characteristics Of Common Stainless Steel Families And Grades
Austenitic
It frequently contains chromium and nickel. Manganese and molybdenum are also present in some grades. While annealed with a solution, austenitic stainless steel is nonmagnetic, certain cold wrought grades are magnetic. Heat-based hardening will not work on certain steels.
Ferritic
This is one of the most cost-effective families accessible due to its decreased nickel content. While low in nickel, these alloys frequently contain chromium, molybdenum, niobium, and/or titanium to increase toughness and creep resistance. Most are magnetic and have strong corrosion resistance as well as weldability.
